Ellen Starr Lyon is a Paintings Conservation Technician at the Indiana University Art Museum in Bloomington, Indiana. She received her Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in Painting and Bachelor of Arts in Art History from Indiana University in 1997. Ellen was accepted to the Masters of Fine Arts Graduate Painting Program at Boston University in 2000. While in school, Ellen garnered the Ruth N. Halls Performance Award, the Harry Engle Award for artistic excellence, and the National Society of Arts and Letters Career Award. Indiana University has purchased two of her paintings.
She has participated in many juried shows at local galleries such as: the Ivy Tech John Waldron Arts Center, Tutto Bene, the Grunwald Gallery, Blueline Gallery and the Kremp Gallery. Ms. Lyon has participated for a second year in the Bloomington Open Studios Tour.
Ellen paints portraits of what she loves: family, objects and plants from her garden. She employs vibrant color and an intimate look at everyday objects. “I love how color, light, and pattern transform objects and the space they inhabit with such nuanced beauty. It is not the object that entices me but the spaces in between.”
She is a native Hoosier and long-time resident of Bloomington, Indiana. She and her husband Art are raising two children, two cats and a puppy. One often finds her stealing a few precious moments to escape deep into a novel while a tornado of family life swirls around her.
