Thank-you for visiting my site. Please take a moment to check-out my portfolio. I live and work in Bloomington, IN. I have been creating all my life and earned a B.F.A. in Painting at Indiana University. I exhibit my work at several Bloomington locations and also enjoy commissions.
My Approach
I paint to create rich moments of intimacy. I make images I can return to, that are warm and embracing, with both subtle and bold beauty. Painting allows me to place what I find visually appealing onto a movable format, like a personal shrine. I want the viewer to be drawn into a familiarity with the subject and delight in the color, light, and atmosphere of the painting.
My choice of subject and theme changes, but what remains constant is the use of pattern, light, objects, and something living, be it plant or human. I first choose a canvas size and then construct a tableau using still life objects selected for their beauty, pattern, color, texture, transparency/opacity, shape, and emotional value. During the painting process, I shift,add, and replace items until the painting itself claims them and the relationships emerge.
What excites me about my current work is the search for the subtle but powerful moments that exist in and between everyday things, found in a sliver of light, the sensual curve of a shadow, the vibration of a living thing against its' ceramic neighbor,the tensions of textures, and the reflection of one object in another. I want to bring an intimate, sensuous, mysterious power to still life.
